About the event
The estate tax has been the subject of extensive opposition (and some active mis-education)
and much of the public has been left with erroneous impressions about how it works, who it affects,
and what policy decisions will be made in the future. Professionals in financial services and gift
planning are frequently asked about estate tax consequences and must deal with confusion and fear
surrounding this issue. A correctly informed public will be in a better position to make wise financial
decisions, which is in the best interest of the professionals and organizations that promote financial
planning and charitable contributions.
Sound, Professional Communications on the Estate Tax featured a panel discussion
on the need for a more accurate public understanding of the estate tax, its costs and benefits, and its implications for charitable giving. Panelists
discussed the future of the estate
tax, information on estate tax legislation in Congress, deficient information directed to the public on the estate tax, and responsible communications around the “death” tax myth.
The program was moderated by Mike Vinyon, Board Chair for the Minnesota Planned Giving Council. Panelists
included Jon Pratt, Executive Director for the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, Erica Whittlinger, founder and former President of Whittlinger Capital Management and featured finance and investment expert for MPR’s Sound Money program, and Craig Wruck, Financial Planner for Kaspick and Company.
This event was sponsored by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and by
the Minnesota Planned Giving Council.
