Recycling Collections Fleet Manager

Eureka Recycling is a nonprofit organization serving Saint Paul and the Twin Cities metro area residents and businesses. Eureka Recycling’s cutting-edge programs are designed to be cost-effective while ensuring the greatest environmental benefits, including the Twin Cities Free Market, the Recycled Products Co-op, event recycling, compost workshops, restaurant composting partnerships and more. Through its award-winning curbside and apartment recycling services, Eureka Recycling directly serves over 150,000 single- and multi-family households, municipal buildings, and community buildings in the cities of Saint Paul, Lauderdale, Maplewood, Roseville, Arden Hills, and St. Louis Park. Our recycling facility is located at 2828 Kennedy Street N.E. in Minneapolis (near 280 and Broadway Ave NE).



JOB TITLE: Recycling Collections Fleet Manager
LOCATION: Twin Cities Metro

SALARY: Commensurate w/ experience    TYPE: Full Time / 40 hours    DEADLINE: 11/25/2009

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Description:
Strategically manage the recycling collection fleet operations (37 drivers, 26 trucks) which provide collection service to our customers. Duties and responsibilities include supervision and work direction, work rule and policy administration, problem resolution, supporting, demonstrating and communicating our mission, auditing fleet operations DOT/DQF policies and procedures for compliance, and generating and maintaining required documentation.

Job Responsibilities:
• Supervise Recycling Collections Fleet Drivers. This includes determining workload and delegating assignments, managing relevant orientation and training, monitoring and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective and/or disciplinary actions.
• Determine priority and sensitivity of inquiries and complaints for proper routing and/or notification of management and customer service staff.
• Work effectively with dispatch and fleet maintenance personnel. May perform dispatch function.
• Coordinate the scheduling and assignment of Recycling Collections Fleet vehicles
• Conduct safety audits and inspections of fleet. Conduct weekly tool box talks and take a proactive role in safety and in our safety committee meetings.
• Investigate all vehicle accidents and work related injuries, complete injury report documents, and provide written reports and recommendations.
• Coordinate the return to work program and related policy administration for all employees who have work related restrictions.
• Review and submit computer generated reports (production, attendance, safety, payroll, etc) to ensure accuracy.
• Retrieve data found in databases to generate requested reports.
• Maintain accurate records and logs.
• Perform all responsibilities of the Recycling Collection Driver and Driver Trainer positions.
• Other tasks as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Technical Qualifications:
• Valid Minnesota Commercial driver's license.
• Acceptable MVR and medical records which meet insurability requirements of commercial vehicle insurer.
• Successful completion of pre-employment medical drug screen exams.
• Must meet all DOT requirements for the operation of straight bodied vehicles with a GVW of 33,000-40,000 lbs.

Experience and Education:
• 2 years supervisory experience in fleet operations or equivalent.
• Experience conducting safety audits, accident investigations, and workers compensation policy administration.
• One year of experience driving a Class B commercial vehicle on residential streets or equivalent.
• Knowledge of DOT regulations and requirements.
• Completion of basic supervision course (Employers Association or equivalent) and has implemented the fundamentals of leadership in the workplace.
• Experience in contract compliance and policies and procedure administration.

Skills and Abilities:
• Demonstrated ability to supervise others (assigning/directing work), conduct employee evaluations, develop and implement staff training and development, take appropriate disciplinary/corrective actions, evaluate and recommend severe disciplinary actions including discharge, etc.
• Has developed and implemented effective decision making and problem solving skills, using logic to identify key facts, explore alternatives, and generate quality solutions
• Has effectively and objectively participated in the selection, evaluation and hiring of employment applicants.
• Understands and promotes the principles of affirmative action and equal opportunity
• Demonstrated ability to communicate with employees and others in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
• Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
• Effectively uses automated software, word processing, and excel spreadsheet applications.
• Demonstrated ability to compose and produce reports, documents and related material
• Able to plan, organize and prioritize time and workload in order to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines
• Has effectively exercised authority or influence appropriate with the level of the position within the organization.
• A personal interest in and knowledge about the environment and resource conservation issues with a commitment to working with community-based organizations and a culturally diverse constituency and work force

Preferred Qualifications:
• Knowledge of Twin Cities’ area roadways and streets.
• Residential recycling collection experience.
• Fluency in Spanish.
• Vehicle fleet dispatching experience.

Physical Requirements:
• Outdoor work environment; regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors
• Subject to seasonal and adverse weather conditions
• Subject to noise from equipment operation
• Must drive a vehicle to conduct work.
• Must perform medium level physical labor: lifting and carrying heavy objects
• Will be required to sit for extended periods of time
• Must climb in and out of truck; bending at the waist; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; carrying; pushing and pulling. Need to be able to lift 50 pounds.
• Must have dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of buttons and levers; and use of feet to control pedals on equipment.
